APEx

Europeana Awareness

Europeana Cloud

Europeana Cloud is a Best Practice Network, coordinated by the Europeana Foundation, designed to establish a cloud-based system for Europeana and its aggregators. Lasting from 2013 to 2015, Europeana Cloud will provide new content, new metadata, a new linked storage system, new tools and services for researchers and a new platform - Europeana Research.

Europeana Creative

The Europeana Creative project will demonstrate that Europeana can facilitate the creative re-use of cultural heritage metadata and content. The project will establish an Open Laboratory Network, create a legal and business framework for content re-use and implement all needed technical infrastructure. The project will create five pilot applications in the thematic areas of History Education, Natural History Education, Tourism, Social Networks, and Design, then conduct open innovation challenges to identify, incubate and spin-off viable projects into the commercial sector. The project will also undertake an extensive stakeholder engagement campaign promoting the benefits of cultural heritage content re-use to creative industries and to memory institutions.

Europeana Inside

The primary objective of the EUROPEANA INSIDE BPN (EU-INSIDE) is to support the Digital Agenda for Europe by achieving a lasting transformation in the quantity, scope and usability of the content available to Europeana from European cultural institutions by reducing or removing the operational, legal, technical and financial barriers to participation.

A group of 17 European partner institutions have joined forces in the “Europeana Newspapers” project and will provide more than 18 million newspaper pages to the EUROPEANA service.

Europeana v1.0

Europeana v1.0 transformed the Europeana prototype into an operational service, developed new features like the timeline, automatic translation and Wikipedia display, improved functionality such as better search ranking and ways to refine results, including the ability to filter on the rights field to see only public domain content, and increased the content accessible through Europeana, bringing the total up to 20 million objects with much better representation across Europe.

Europeana v2.0

Europeana v2.0 activities include efforts to: enhance content, increase and facilitate the re-use of content, develop a sustainable finance and provision model, create centralised repositories of linguistic resources, release new versions and maintain the service and its APIs, develop features and functionalities, improve the user experience by distribution of content into user environments and coordinate the network of contributing organisations.

ARROW

Arrow will help libraries who want to digitise material to find information about rights holders. It's a consortium of European national libraries, publishers and collective management organisations, who also represent writers through their main European associations and national organisations.

ARROW Plus

ARROW is a tool to assist libraries and others in identifying rights, authors and publishers and rights status in copyright text and image based works in a streamlined and automated way through querying a network of data sources. ARROW Plus builds on and further implements the ARROW system, which it aims at refining after the piloting phase in Germany, France, Spain and United Kingdom.

APENet

APEnet (Archival Portal of Europe) will develop a portal that will be the central reference point for the national archives of Europe making archival material widely accessible to EU citizens. APEnet will also function as an aggregator, collecting material from national archives and making the generated content available at Europeana. Coordinated by the Spanish national archives, APEnet is a Best Practice Network that began in January 2009.

ATHENA

BHL-Europe

The BHL-Europe (Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe) project develops a multilingual portal, which will provide unprecedented access to more than 25 million pages of biodiversity literature. The unique collections include information on animals, plants, artworks and rare works by important scientists such as Charles Darwin and Alexander von Humboldt.

CARARE

CARARE will play an important role in ensuring that digital content for Europe's unique archaeological monuments, architecturally important buildings, historic town centres and industrial monuments of World, European and National heritage importance is interoperable with Europeana and accessible alongside items from national libraries, archives, museums and other content providers. EFG

The European Film Gateway (EFG) is unlocking the richness of Europe's film archives for Europeana users and cinema lovers all over the world. Initiated by the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) and the Europeana Foundation, EFG project is developing an online portal, which will provide unprecedented access to around 600,000 digital objects. This unique collection includes feature and short films, images, posters, film set drawings, photos and text documents.

EFG1914

EFG1914 is the follow-up project of EFG – The European Film Gateway (2008-2011). The main outcome of the EFG project is the online portal The European Filmgateway, which gives access to several hundreds of thousands photos, films, texts and other material preserved in European film archives.

EuroPhoto

EURO-Photo is digitising at least 150,000 photographs from 10 major European news agencies. These images will be added to Europeana along with an archive of more than 1 million already digitised photographs. The photographs record major events in Europe's history as well as daily life, from the beginning of the 20th century to the mid 1990s.

Europeana 1914-1918

Europeana 1914-1918 is based on an initiative at the University of Oxford where people across Britain were asked to bring family letters, photographs and keepsakes from the War to be digitised. The success of the idea – which became the Great War Archive – has encouraged Europeana, Europe's digital archive, library and museum, to bring other national institutions across Europe into an alliance with Oxford University. The collaboration brings European stories online alongside their British, German, Slovenian, Luxembourgian, Irish, etc. counterparts in a World War One stories collection.

Europeana Collections 1914-1918

Europeana Collections 1914-1918 will create by 2014 – the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War - a substantial digital collection of material from national library collections of ten libraries in eight countries that found themselves on different sides of the historic conflict. In the run-up to 2014 and in the following years, strong interest in the topic is expected from a wide variety of users – including the general public, local and family historians, education professionals, archives, museums and historical societies, people working in the media, the arts or in the tourism industry.

Europeana Fashion

Europeana Fashion is a best practice network co-funded under the CIP ICT-PSP programme and composed by 23 partners from 12 European countries, which represent the leading European institutions and collections in the fashion domain. The consortium will aggregate and provide to Europeana the most outstanding and rich materials about the history of European fashion, include more than 700.000 fashion-related digital objects, ranging from historical dresses to accessories, photographs, posters, drawings, sketches, videos, and fashion catalogues.

Europeana Regia is a collaborative project that aims to create a European corpus of digitised, mostly illuminated manuscripts. These are testimonies of the circulation of texts and art in Europe in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. EuropeanaTravel had two main objectives as a project: Its first objective was to digitise a substantial number of resources from major university libraries and national libraries of Europe to make them available via Europeana. The materials included books, maps, manuscripts, photos, film negatives, postcards and other types of objects related to the theme of travel and tourism, one of the priority content themes identified by Europeana.

HOPE

Judaica Europeana

Judaica Europeana works with libraries, archives and museums to provide integrated access to digital collections, which document the Jewish presence and heritage in Europe. Since 2010, Judaica Europeana partners have digitized and uploaded to Europeana 3.7 million items. They include 3,611,000 pages from books, newspapers and archives; 62,000 photographs, postcards and museum objects; 23,000 sound files of music and oral history; 2,000 moving image files. This content will continue to grow as new partners provide access to their digital collections to be integrated in Europeana. The Judaica Europeana network is involved - through the European Association for Jewish Culture - in the Digitized Manuscripts to Europeana (DM2E) and the AthenaPlus projects.

Natural Europe

The Natural Europe project is working to connect the digital collections of natural history museums with Europeana, by creating the software tools that will allow content to be used and shared. ThinkMOTION

The thinkMOTION project will add the following to Europeana: digitised texts, drawings, images, interactive animations and physical models related to machine science. In doing so, thinkMOTION aims to show the importance of technical developments to Europe's cultural heritage, and highlight the contributions of the countless European inventors and engineers who have enabled technical progress.
